shellshocked
a child was reported missing near the water.
i wanted to tell you now
so we can sing a
chorus of tragedy
like sea nymphs yearning for air
between the waves of melancholy

sometimes i find myself at the beach
i am mother of pearl
searching for neptune’s babe
retracing little footsteps
kissed by foam
i am left with nothing
but ruined sandcastles and
salt on my skin
i save seashells, cradling them
by the caverns of my ear
but only hear the sea’s grief:
a shrapnel of cries
stretching like a siren
over the shore
shellshocked.
please, i do not want to
become leucothea
i listened to the conch’s trumpet
till the end
triton, have mercy
This mother wants her pearl back.
